Awareness Meetings

My name is Chitra w/o Senthilkumar. I am residing at Medur Village at Kemmarampalayam village panchayat. I have a son and a daughter. My husband died in an accident. My aged mother is with me. I have run the family with my salary. I have to educate my children and so I asked my mother to grow two goats for supplementing my family income. I used to go for work outside and take care of the family. We were making barely a living with the present income and any new expenses will not be met with the present salary.

During this time, an announcement was made in our village about the awareness meeting. I participated in the meeting and came to know about many things and including information about importance of individual household toilets and the diseases that will spread because of open defecation. They informed that they are going to build individual household toilets in the village and the beneficiary contribution to be paid by the beneficiary is only Rs. 1000. I immediately provided all the documents required for building the toilet. In our village they have built 41 individual household toilets. Wherever we turn we can see toilets built by ITC with their logo.

We are all using the toilets built through this scheme in our village. All the streets in our village are clean now. Adolescent girls and old people are able to use the toilets with good protection. Defecating in the open has been completely stopped. All the households which do not have individual household toilets have been identified and awareness has been given to them. All this happened because of the awareness meeting conducted by ITC. We are grateful for ITC and Imayam for bringing this scheme to our village.

IHHT - Toilet

Case study 1: My name is Kannaiyan and I am 58 years old. I am residing at Kurumbanur village in the Thekkampatti panchayat. ITC/MSK and Imayam took a survey in our village for building free individual household toilets (IHHT)to those houses which do not have toilets in their house. After few months they announced that they are going to have an awareness meeting in the village and I also participated in the meeting. I listened to all that was said by the ITC staff. After the meeting all those who did not have toilets in their houses gave their names. I did not enroll myself as I thought I have some land and agricultural field and when it is available I did not feel the necessity for a toilet. Also open defecation will help in fertilizing my land.

The ITC/ Imayam staff did not leave me and they kept coming to my house explaining and giving me advice.  I had clearly mentioned to them that I do not have interest in building a toilet for my house but they never listened and continuously bugged me to have a toilet.  So I accepted it so as to evade their bugging.  Within the next two days they unloaded all the building materials.  Both my brothers were against it and asked the unloaded things to be taken back.

Then I realized how the staff of ITC/Imayam had been coming over to help us and that I have made a mistake by rejecting it.  I was not able to face them but the staff was doing their work as usual.  In few months all the construction for toilets was over and there were new toilets everywhere with new paints and it was standing out.  I took my brothers with me and showed them the newly built toilets.  They also liked it and they regretted that they refused it.  My brothers told me to build a toilet for my house in my place.  I called the ITC/Imayam staff and they said that they will build it in the next batch.

In the next batch, they sanctioned a toilet for me and they while they were building it, my brother’s daughter and wife visited our home.  They also wanted a toilet and told my brother and they built a toilet in their place. My second brother also wanted a toilet after seeing all this and he asked for it.  We applied for a toilet to be sanctioned to us by diverting it from going to another person.  They gave an option that whoever took the pits first will get the sanction and we utilized this option to take the pit first.

ITC/Imayam has changed our outlook on toilets and we built it.  I was amazed how the ITC/Imayam staff being a lady is able to make such wonderful work.  It made me feel that I should also do some social service. I am now helping that staff to identify houses which do not have toilets.  I am now working in motivating the villagers to utilize the toilets built and also to keep the village clean.

I am feeling proud that although the ITC company is at a long distance from our village, they have joined with the Swacch Bharath scheme to bring this facility to our village.  I am happy that ITC has taken the initiative and did this to our village. I assure that I will join with them in bringing about change in the rural areas by working along with them.

Case study 2: My name is Thulasimani w/o Selvaraj.  I am residing at Kandiyur AD colony at Kemmarampalayam panchayat for the past 42 years.  Only I and my husband are living in our home and we are doing coolie work.  We have two sons and one daughter.  They are all married and are living separately.  As we do not have enough money to build a house, we have made a shed type of house with asbestos sheet roofing, cement flooring and the sides with thatched coconut leaves. Our house is near the foothills of the mountain.  We have mountains on all four sides. We have 54 households in our village.  There are 4 houses which are built by the green scheme and some own houses which has toilet facilities.  The rest of the houses do not have toilet facilities and they go for open defecation.  During rainy season our locality reeks of decomposing defecation. Diseases spread because of it and we are unable walk on the road because of that.  We will not be able to go out for toileting alone during night.  As we are close to the forest area, there is a danger of getting hit by an elephant, which uses our area as its regular route.

We approached the panchayat office to build us a common toilet facility but due to non availability of water and place they did not sanction to us.  We heard about the scheme by ITC /Imayam for building individual household toilets.  I enquired more about it in the panchayat office.  They asked us to approach the ITC/MSK/Imayam office and I approached them.  They said they will consult the panchayat office authorities and let us know.  Likewise, they came back to us within a week and they took a survey of the houses without toilets.  They conducted an awareness meeting and announced that they will build toilets with the funds from ITC as well as from the Government.  The total cost of building an individual toilet is Rs.16,000, out of which Rs. 12,000 will be the Government contribution and Rs. 4000 will be ITC’s contribution.  They asked us to dig two pits as our contribution.  Accordingly they selected 44 houses for building individual toilets and the work started.

The first ground breaking ceremony was conducted in our house for building the toilets and I felt very proud and satisfied.  I felt proud that officials from ITC and the important people from the panchayat visited our house for this ceremony.  About 44 individual household toilets were built in our village and wherever we turned we could see the newly constructed toilets.  We are all using the toilets effectively.

Our grandchildren are feeling happy when they come to our house to see that we have a toilet in our house.  I am maintaining the toilets clean and hygienically.  As my house is the first house when they enter the village, whoever comes to the village visits our house and toilet first and it gives me great pride.  The toilet that ITC has built has better concrete roofing than my house.  I am thankful and grateful for the service done by ITC and Imayam staff for our village.
